Archaeological Pollen Analyses from North-central Wisconsin (1966)
DOCUMENT Full-Text James Schoenwetter.

Study of 30 surface and 18 archaeological-context pollen samples was undertaken to assess the potential for further archaeological palynology research. Surface sample analysis allows palynological recognition of eight habitat types ranging from dry and cold through wet and moist to dry and warm. Comparison of fossil and modern surface pollen data suggests the character of paleoecological change sequences at 4 sites, a positive potential for inter-site and intra-site relative cross-dating, and a...

Archaeological Pollen Analysis of Copan Reservoir Sediment Samples (1975)
DOCUMENT Full-Text James Schoenwetter.

Draft of palynological study published in S.C. Vehik and R.A. Pailes, 1979, Excavations in the Copan Reservoir of Northeaastern Oklahoma and Southeastern Kansas. Research Series 4, Archaeological Research and Management Center, University of Oklahoma: 225-238.

An Archaeological Pollen Analysis of Joe’s Valley Alcove (1981)
DOCUMENT Full-Text James Schoenwetter.

Analysis of palynological and radiocarbon data from this site with comparable data from other sites leads to a general paleoenvironmental model covering the 8300-6000 B.P. period for the American Southwest. This allows reconstruction of the character of paleoclimatic variations on the resources used by the Archaic occupants of this cave site, and assessment of theories of the Anthropology of Southwestern Archaic populations.

Archaeological Pollen Study of Two Dune Sites in New Mexico (1976)
DOCUMENT Full-Text James Schoenwetter.

Study of the pollen of 4 surface and 41 stratigraphic and archaeological-context sediment samples was undertaken to provide independent evidence of the antiquity of sites LA 11828 and LA 11904, and of the hypothesis the two sites had the same cultural functions. The pollen record suggests the two sites differ in antiquity: the occupation horizon samples from LA 11828 correspond to others that date to the Historic Period, while those from LA 11904 correspond to others that date 1800 - 300 B.C....

Archaeological Prospection for Ring-Midden Features in Southeastern New Mexico Using Lidar Data: An Experimental Study
PROJECT Uploaded by: Rebecca Wells

SRI conducted an archaeological survey for ring-midden features using lidar data in three localities in the foothills of the Guadalupe Mountains and Sacramento Mountains in southeastern New Mexico. The unique shape and prominence of ring middens were identified by remote sensing data and then verified in the field within the sampled areas. The result supports the use of lidar data for project scoping and landscape-level studies, but cannot substitute for Section 106 inventory due to the...

Archaeological Prospection for Ring-Midden Features in Southeastern New Mexico Using Lidar Data: An Experimental Study (2015)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Michael Heilen. Monica Murrell. Timothy Mills. Nahide Aydin. Phillip O. Leckman. Adam Byrd.

The final report presents the methodology and results of this experimental study to see if remote sensing data alone is able to identify the presence of ring-midden features. Lidar data obtained for sample areas was then verified on the ground, and found to be successful in identifying all but disturbed or low-profile ring middens. Therefore, the use of lidar data is appropriate for project scoping and landscape area studies, but not as an alternative to Section 106 survey.

DOCUMENT Full-Text Katherine Spielmann. Melissa Kruse-Peeples.

The spring 2004 pilot archaeological research at La Plata Pueblo was designed to begin acquiring data concerning the distribution, contents, and depth of midden deposits at the site. Midden of some depth is necessary for the Legacies project goals in order to obtain sufficient samples of 1) ceramics for an accumulations study and 2) well-preserved faunal and floral remains for comparative analysis with contemporary data on plant and animal distributions. Our data collection strategy involved a...
