The River Basin Surveys, Smithsonian Institution examined the area to be inundated by Kelsey Creek Reservoir in Lake County, California for archaeological resources. Clarence E. Smith carried out the field work in the fall of 1947. Although the area is small, no less than 13 sites were found within it. Four of the sites were habitation sites, as indicated by the presence of middens. The other 9 sites were likely "workshop" sites.

Erosion along a wash running into Arivaca Creek resulted in the exposure of skeletal remains from a prehistoric cemetery.
