PaleoResearch Institute

PaleoResearch Institute was formed to conduct archaeobotanic research in a contract setting, leading the industry in innovation, analysis, and interpretation of the past. Our goals are to maintain excellence in extraction, identification, and analysis of the materials we work with, to promote excellence in the interpretation of those materials and in reports, and to promote development and use of state-of-the-art techniques for the analysis and interpretation of archaeobotanic records. Work conducted in a contract setting is particularly subject to time and budget constraints, so the above must be accomplished in a timely manner.

    Five samples from the fill of two roasting pits at the Mega site, AZ 88:9:375 (ASM), in Pima County, Arizona, were examined for macrofloral remains. The two roasting pits are visible on the site surface, which is covered with a light scatter of ceramic and lithic artifacts. Macrofloral analysis is used to provide information on use of plant resources by the site occupants, in order to help address research questions concerning social and economic organization.

    Sediment from three hearths at 42WS3384 was floated to recover macrofloral remains. One botanic sample recovered near one of the hearths also was submitted for identification.     Feature 4 front the floor of a pithouse at Site 42UN1773 was sampled for macrofloral remains. Fremont Uintah gray ceramics were found, indicating definite Fremont occupation of this site. A shell bead was found underneath a prepared floor that overlaid the feature, implying occupation after cleaning the pithouse out. These samples were recovered from a basin-shaped fire lens and from a bowl-shaped pit inside a stone circle.     Samples from the fill of late historic hearths, refuse pits, and privies at seven sites on the Carlota project were floated to recover macrofloral remains. These sites are believed to have been occupied primarily by Euroamerican miners and ranchers around circa 1910-1945 +. Macrofloral analysis is used to provide information concerning plant food resources utilized by the later historic occupants of the area.

    Fill from a prehistoric hearth or roasting pit at site 5DA2075 in Douglas County, Colorado, was floated to recover macrofloral remains. This site is part of the Reuter-Hess Reservoir Project. Charcoal from this feature yielded a conventional radiocarbon age of 1590 ± 40 BP (Beta-211597), with a two sigma calibrated age range of cal AD 400-560. Macrofloral analysis will be used to determine plant resources utilized by the occupants of this site during this time period.

    Two soil samples from the fill of hearth features the Airport Rings Site (24YE357) were submitted for flotation and macrofloral analysis. The site is a concentration of 11 stone circles located within the Yellowstone National Park boundary in Montana. Overlapping stone circles and apparent recycling of rock suggest that this area experienced multiple occupations. Macrofloral remains identified in the samples will provide information on plants utilized by the occupant of the site.

    Pipeline trenching in the eastern margins of the Wind River Basin, Wyoming, uncovered a hearth in the trench wall at Site 48FR2139. The hearth yielded a radiocarbon date of 4220 ± 80 BP, suggesting a Middle Archaic occupation. Soil from the hearth was examined for macrofloral remains to provide subsistence information.

These sites represent placer mining camps. The deposit at 24LC1716 is believed to date to the 1860s or 1870s, while the deposit at 24LC1723 might date to the 1870s to 1880s.
