The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed forestry activities included two hardwood selection cuts (Block 12BC1-10 and 15ANB-09), one pine selection cut (Block 15ASA2-09), 10 pine thinnings (Blocks 08BC-09, 10D06TH, 12AC-09, 12BA-09, 12BB2-09, 12BC-09, 12BC2-10, 12CA-09, 12CB-09, and 15ASA1-09), one seed tree cut (Block CA07B-09), two overstory removal cuts (Blocks 10BB1-09, 10BB2-09, and 11BF-09), and one clearcut (Block 10BB1-09). The Project Area consists of approximately 538.32 hectares (1,330.23 acres) of forestland.

The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the proposed forestry blocks and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Ten previously recorded archaeological sites (44CE0350, 44CE0351, 44CE0352, 44CE0353, 44CE0354, 44CE0388, 44CE0429, 44CE0488, 44CE0500, and 44CE0543), four previously unrecorded archaeological sites (44CE0656, 44CE0657, 44CE0658, and 44CE0659), and three artifact locations (TS0925, TS0955, and TS0956) were identified within the Project Area. Three previously recorded archaeological sites (44CE0052, 44CE0058, and 44CE0430) have been destroyed and eight previously recorded archaeological sites (44CE0306, 44CE0347, 44CE0348, 44CE0355, 44CE0387, 44CE0484, 44CE0485, and 44CE0486) were not re-located within the Project Area.

Two sites are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and 11 sites are recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, Site 44CE0488 was identified during previous BRAC-related surveys and is included in the “Programmatic Agreement Among the United States Army, the Virginia State Historic Preservation Officer, and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Regarding Implementation of Portions of the BRAC Realignment of Fort Lee, Virginia Relative to Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia” and all required fieldwork at the site has been completed. Portions of sites 44CE0347, 44CE0348, 44CE0355, and 44CE0387 were identified outside of the Project Area. While sites 44CE0350, 44CE0354, 44CE0388, 44CE0429, 44CE0543, 44CE0657, 44CE0658, and 44CE0659 will be flagged and avoided during proposed forestry activities, none of the remaining archaeological sites will be avoided during the proposed activities.
