Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Unit 11, Van Buren and 44th Streets: SSI DMB Testing and Data Recovery, Field Specimen (FS) Data

Summary

The DMB Property Field Specimen Data sheet contains basic data on the artifacts recovered during this project's testing and data recovery efforts at Pueblo Grande, Unit 11. It presents data by artifact type for each PD unit (and associated feature). It lists the PD number, the specimen (FS) number (specimen numbers range from 1 to n for each PD unit), and the point location (PL) number (if applicable). The table then provides artifact type, lithic material (if applicable), lithic condition (if applicable), and Vessel ID (if applicable) data. It also provides additional artifact processing and curation information.

Column Name Data Type Type Category Coding Sheet Ontology Search
ARTIFACT_TYPE The general artifact type of a given artifact specimen from a particular PD unit.
BIGINT  Coded Value uncategorized Soil Systems, Inc. Artifact Type Coding Sheet none true
LITHIC_TOTAL The total number of lithic artifacts in a given FS.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Chipped Stone : Count none none true
FEATURE_TYPE The inferred type (i.e., function and/or cultural use, significance) of a given feature. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet for a list of all available feature types.
BIGINT  Coded Value Provenience and Context : Feature ID/Number Soil Systems, Inc. Feature Type Coding Sheet none true
COMMENTS Additional description of and/or comments about a given artifact specimen.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
FEATURE_NUMBER The number of a feature identified and documented in a given PD unit. At each site, feature numbers were assigned from 1 to n. Subfeature numbers include the associated feature number followed by a decimal; subfeature numbers begin at .01 for each feature. For example, the second subfeature excavated in Feature 15 is coded as 15.02.
DOUBLE  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Horizontal Location none none true
FS The field specimen number assigned to an artifact type from a given PD unit. Note that one FS # was assigned to multiple artifacts of the same type from a single PD unit. See detailed analysis data tables (i.e., ceramic tables, shell tables, etc) for artifact counts. In the field, specimen numbers were assigned to bags of like artifacts from the same PD. When artifacts were collected, a specimen number was assigned to a bag that contained particular artifact types from a PD unit. Thus, a separate FS # was assigned to the ceramics, lithics, groundstone, etc that were recovered from a PD. Specimen numbers run from 1 to n for each PD unit. Thus, to identify a specific specimen, an analyst must use a combination of the PD No and the FS No.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Item/Slash none none true
SITE The ASM number of the site under investigation.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Site none none true
TIME_DATE_STAMP The date stamp generated by the Advanced Revelation (AREV) database software when this FS record was originally created in the data set.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
VESSEL_ID When whole or reconstructible vessels were found in the field, SSI archaeologists assigned to a capital letter designation (A through Z) to identify individual vessels and any sherds that belonged to those vessels. This field records the letter (A through Z) that identifies an individual vessel and/or the sherds that comprise it. Vessel ID letters run from to A to Z in a given feature. It is essential that the PD No, the FS No., and the Vessel ID remain associated to identify a particular vessel and its pieces.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Ceramic none none true
AUDIT_VERSION The Soil Systems, Inc. relational database originally contained audit tables for each artifact/analysis type to track updates/changes made to the primary data tables. Database managers recorded changes to particular data values in these audit tables. The changes were then passed on to the main data table (e.g., RS_CERAMICS). The AUDIT_VERSION number refers to the "audit number" for that particular row. Thus, if a data row contains an AUDIT_VERSION value of "2", then that row has been updated/changed with the audit-version number 2 (i.e., it has been updated two times).
BIGINT  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
FROM_FS During rough sort artifact analysis, any artifact that was categorized incorrectly and placed in the wrong FS bag in the field was re-categorized and placed in the correct FS. When an artifact was moved to the correct FS, the analyst recorded the original FS from which the artifact was removed in this column.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context none none true
BAG_DATE The date that an FS # was assigned to a bag of like artifacts in the field.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none true
DEACCESS_COMMENTS Additional notes describing the de-accession of an artifact specimen (PD and FS).
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none true
DETAILED A presence/absence field that records whether or not an SSI analyst performed additional, detailed artifact analysis on a given artifact specimen (PD and FS specimen).
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none true
BOX_NUMBER The number of the curation box that holds a given artfiact PD and FS. The curation boxes were sent either to the Arizona State Museum (ASM) repository or to Pueblo Grande Museum for cataloging and storage.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Storage : Box Number none none true
CATALOG VARCHAR  Uncoded Value uncategorized none none true
ANALYSIS_DATE The date when basic artifact analysis was performed on a given specimen.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none true
PD The provenience designation (PD) unit from which a given FS was collected. It is essential that the PD number remain associated with the FS #. A combination of the PD unit No. and the FS No. identifies a unique FS from that unit.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Horizontal Location none none true
DEACCESS A presence/absence field that records de-accession of an artifact specimen (PD and FS specimen). In general, de-accession occurred when artifact samples were repatriated to affiliated tribal groups (predominantly Salt River Pima Maricopa).
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Storage : Other none none true
PROJECT The SSI project number during which a given PD was defined/investigated/excavated.
VARCHAR  Uncoded Value Provenience and Context : Project none none true
LITHIC_MATERIAL The material type that best describes the raw material from which a lithic artifact is made. Please refer to Soil Systems, Inc. Material Type Coding Sheet for a list of all available lithic material types.
BIGINT  Coded Value Chipped Stone : Material Soil Systems, Inc. Lithic Material Type Coding Sheet none true
LITHIC_CONDITION The completeness (e.g., whole, fragmentary) of lithic artifacts in a given PD and FS.
BIGINT  Coded Value Chipped Stone : Form Soil Systems, Inc. Lithic Condition Coding Sheet none true
LITHIC_COMMENTS Additional description and/or notes on lithic artifacts in a given FS. If an artifact was categorized as "unidentified" or "other," it should be described in this field. Note that this field was typically NOT entered into the SSI's AREV digital database.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Chipped Stone : Form none none true
PL A point location number assigned to a particular artifact or group of artifacts. When an artifact or group of artifacts were found in a particularly well-preserved and/or meaningful behavioral context (e.g., on a house floor, sealed beneath a vessel), the artifact or artifacts may have been mapped in place. These artifacts were assigned PL #s to identify them (and their associated individual spatial data). PL #s run from 1 to n in a given unit/feature. Each PL should be assigned a unique FS # (with some exceptions). It is essential to maintain the association of a PD No, Feature No, and PL No. to identify a specific point located artifact.
BIGINT  Uncoded Value Lookup : Label none none true
