POLLEN AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT 5LA5255 (SUE SITE) AND 5LA5846 (CARVED ROCK HILL), PINON CANYON MANEUVER AREA, SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1990

Summary

Stratigraphic pollen samples were examined from two archaeological

sites in the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Area — 5LA5255 (the Sue Site) and

5LA5846 (Carved Rock Hill). The stratigraphic pollen record was analyzed to

provide a description of paleoenvironmental conditions at both sites. In

addition, the data gathered from this stratigraphic examination of the Sue

Site will be compared with a previous stratigraphic study at that site.

Botanical materials recovered during dry screening at the Sue Site were

also submitted for identification. Most of these remains are uncharred.

Recovery of uncharred remains in a rockshelter cannot automatically be

assumed to be contamination. Therefore, identification might relate to the

presence of plants in the local environment at the time of sediment

accumulation at the Sue Site.
