POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR THREE SITES (42WS964, 42WS956, AND 42WS1340) AT SOUTHGATE, SOUTHWESTERN UTAH

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; R.A. Varney

Year: 2008

Summary

Mitigation of Virgin Anasazi habitation sites at Southgate involved pollen sampling a

variety of contexts. Three sites were selected for pollen analysis out of the six Southgate

localities tested. They include two relatively small sites (42Ws956 and 42Ws1340) that exhibit

Late P-II occupations and one large, complex site (42Ws964) that was occupied from BM-III

through Late P-II. Pollen samples represent surface structures, pit houses, mini pithouses,

storage structures, a floor bin, and a burial. Pollen analysis was undertaken to provide a record

of subsistence and feature use.
