EXAMINATION OF BULK SOIL, IDENTIFICATION OF DETRITAL CHARCOAL AND AMS RADIOCARBON AGE DETERMINATION OF MATERIAL FROM EL VADO DAM PALEOFLOOD STUDY RIO CHAMA, NEW MEXICO

Author(s): Peter Kovacik

Year: 2012

Summary

Twelve bulk soil samples and twenty-eight detrital charcoal samples were examined to recover organic fragments suitable for radiocarbon age determination. These samples were recovered from stream deposits along the Rio Chama River in the Rio Grande Basin near El Vado Dam and Reservoir, New Mexico. Botanic components and detrital charcoal were identified, and potentially radiocarbon datable material was separated. A total of nine radiocarbon dates were obtain on charcoal from these samples.
