Phase I Archaeological Survey Management Unit 10A, Avon Park Air Force Range, Avon Park, Florida

Summary

This survey consisted of a Phase I archaeological survey of Management Unit 1 OA, ca. 3,400 acres, located in the extreme southeast comer of the facility. The purpose of the survey was to assist APAFR in compliance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, and various Air Force regulations. Topographic relief is minimal and open hammocks and grasslands are the dominant vegetation in the vicinity of the river. Various flatwood communities dominate~ in areas away from the river. High probability areas (primarily pre-World War II oak hammocks) were shovel tested at 25-meter intervals along parallel transects spaced 25m apart, medium probabiliity areas were tested at 50-m intervals, and low probability areas were subjected to a pedestrian survey along transects spaced at 30-meter intervals. The survey resulted in the investigation of 14 sites. These totals included 13 new sites (8HG880-8HG892) and one previously identified site (8HG32). The 14 sites include 8 prehistoric sites, 2 historic sites, and 4 multi-component sites. Prehistoric sites recommended potentially eligible to the NRHP include 8HG880-8HG882 and 8HG887. Historical sites/components recommended potentially eligible include two sites related to the former town of Fort Kissimmee (8HG881 and 8HG882), a structural feature (8HG886), and the three World War II-period observatiion towers (8HG889). Evaluative testing to determine the National Register eligibility status of these sites is recommended.
