The Hayden Rhodes Large Site Resurvey: A Class III Cultural Resources Survey and Assessment Within 16 Archaeological Sites on Bureau of Reclamation Right-of-way Along the Hayden Rhodes Aqueduct (Central Arizona Project Canal) Between Quartzite and Phoenix, La Paz and Maricopa Counties, Arizona: Report

Part of the Hayden-Rhodes Large Site Resurvey project

Author(s): Logan Simpson

Year: 2014

Summary

The Bureau of Reclamation has developed an archaeological site database for the Central Arizona Project (CAP) canal main stem based on Class III survey data that includes all previously recorded sites. An unknown number of these sites were either destroyed by construction or excavation, while others are no longer located within the CAP right-of-way (ROW). To assist Reclamation in checking the accuracy of its site database, Logan Simpson Design, Inc. was asked to relocate and record 16 sites that had been identified along the Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct (formerly the Granite Reef Aqueduct) of the CAP system.

All 16 sites were relocated between mile markers 53 and 168 within La Paz and Maricopa counties. The combined site areas within the CAP ROW total 1,834 acres. AZ T:6:42(ASM)/AZ T:6:2(ASU) and AZ T:8:176(ASM)/AZ T:8:35(ASU) were determined eligible. Three sites were determined not eligible (AZ T:6:13[ASM], AZ T:6:140[ASM]/AZ T:6:3[ASU], and AZ T:8:222[ASM]/AZ T:8:79[ASU]). Three sites were recommended eligible and contributing within the ROW (AZ S:6:4[ASM]/AZ S:6:5[ASM]/AZ S:6:3[ASU], AZ T:3:368[ASM]/AZ T:3:18[ASU]/AZ T:3:19[ASU], and AZ U:5:357[ASM]/AZ U:5:67[ASU]). Three sites were previously recommended not eligible (AZ S:8:1[ASM]/AZ S:8:4[ASU], AZ S:8:10[ASM]/AZ S:8:12[ASU], and AZ S:8:41[ASM]/AZ S:8:3[ASU]/AZ S:8:13[ASU]). Four sites were previously recommended eligible but considered non-contributing within the ROW (AZ S:6:3[ASM]/AZ S:6:4[ASU], AZ T:5:49[ASM]/AZ T:5:4[ASU], AZ T:6:139[ASM]/AZ T:6:4[ASU], and AZ T:6:141[ASM]/AZ T:6:1[ASU]. One site was unevaluated but considered non-contributing within the ROW (AZ S:8:2[ASM]).
