Summary

Archaeological Inventory and Assessment of Wappapello Lake in Wayne and Butler Counties, Missouri.

The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) at Missouri State University was subcontracted by JMA (John Milner Associates, Inc.) for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), St. Louis District (MVS) to conduct National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 archaeological compliance surveys on 2,481.9 acres of Corps fee-title land in the Wappapello Reservoir, Missouri. The project area consisted of agricultural lease areas in bottomlands and additional 40-acre parcels in upland settings. Archaeological survey was complemented by geomorphological survey in targeted bottomland locations. As a result of survey, 53 archaeological sites were located and documented. Twenty-six isolated finds also were recorded. Thirty-nine of the 53 sites were new, whereas 14 were previously recorded. Moreover, of the 53 sites, 32 are prehistoric, 17 are historic, and 4 have both prehistoric and historic components. Of the 53 sites documented during our survey, preliminary examination suggests that 34 are eligible for nomination to the NRHP under Criterion D. This ARRA funded Task Order employed 51 specialists.
