Summary

Site 13DB889 is situated within a historic, urban neighborhood along Rhomberg and Kniest Streets in the City of Dubuque, Iowa. The nineteenth to twenty-first century homes were occupied predominantly by working-class, German Catholic residents (Leah D. Rogers, personal communication August 10, 2016). Several privies, possibly used into the 1910s, were sampled for pollen, parasite, and macrofloral analyses. Pollen and macrofloral analyses of privy fill provide information concerning foods eaten and trash disposed by the historic site occupants. Parasite analysis lends insight into the health of the privy users. Samples from wood-lined privies (500 Block of Rhomberg, Features 1 and 4, and 505-507 Rhomberg, Feature 4, Sample 5) were examined for their contents and also to identify wood used to line the privies.
