Archaeological Survey of Burnt Mountain and Agua Fria Tunnels, Granite Reef Aqueduct, Central Arizona Project

Summary

Under contract with the Bureau of Reclamation, the Office of Cultural Resource Management (OCRM), Department of Anthropology, Arizona State University, completed an archaeological survey of the Burnt Mountain and Agua Fria Tunnels of the Granite Reef Aqueduct. The Burnt Mountain Tunnel is located on 150 acres on the southeast slope of Burnt Mountain. The Agua Fria Tunnel is located on a 180 acres in the Hieroglyphic Mountains.

This report describes the results of the archaeological surveys conducted at the Burnt Mountain and Agua Fria Tunnels of the Granite Reef Aqueduct. Results suggest that the project area was part of a secondary resource zone, an area which apparently did not support a permanent population, but was utilized intermittently, probably on a seasonal basis. The project areas are on Burnt Mountain and in the Hieroglyphic Mountains.

Two sites were recorded during the Burnt Mountain and Agua Fria Tunnels survey: AZ S:8:6 (ASU) in the Burnt Mountain project area and AZ T:3:19 (ASU) in the Agua Fria project area. These sites are of indeterminate age, although they are likely associated with the Hohokam or Yuman traditions.
