Additional Cultural Resource Investigations, Archaeological Sites 44CE0591, 44CE0596, and 44CE0597, Proposed 1200-Meter Range, Fort A.P. Hill (AP2012.001)

Summary

The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, has completed additional cultural resource investigations at three archaeological sites in the project area for a proposed 1200-meter range at Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The Survey Area consists of three sites (44CE0591, 44CE0596, and 44CE0597) that were originally identified and recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places during a Phase I, reconnaissance-level, survey conducted by Paciulli, Simmons and Associates, Ltd. (Morton 2009). The results of the additional, intensive-level survey investigations are presented here as a supplemental report to the previous reconnaissance-level survey report by Paciulli, Simmons and Associates, Ltd., entitled Cultural Resources Phase I Reconnaissance Survey for the Proposed Asymmetrical Warfare Group (AWG) 1200 Meter Range, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia (Morton 2009).

The objective of the archaeological survey was to evaluate the potential eligibility of archaeological sites 44CE0591, 44CE0596, and 44CE0597 for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The survey included pedestrian surface survey and metal detector survey in the Survey Area and the excavation of shovel tests at sites 44CE0596 and 44CE0597. All three archaeological sites represent early twentieth-century domestic occupations that have ubiquitous twentieth-century surface features and lack site integrity. Sites 44CE0591, 44CE0596, and 44CE0597 are consequently recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places owing to the lack of site integrity.

This project includes the report and artifact inventory.
