Montpelier Plantation (38BU1789) Antebellum Life at Palmetto Bluff (2004)
Archaeological data recovery investigations at 38BU1789 encountered the remnants of the colonial and antebellum settlement of Montpelier Plantation. Excavations in the preservation area exposed the remnants of the planter’s house and a nearby outbuilding. Excavations to the west of the preservation area recovered a sample of artifacts associated with a postbellum occupation, possibly a tenant or squatter, but encountered no definite evidence of a former building. Test excavations were completed at prehistoric archeological sites 23DA407 and 23DA408. Excavations slated for 23DA83 could not be conducted due to high lake levels and will be undertaken at a later date. These sites are being actively excavated by collectors and are in danger of destruction. Hand excavations included 1 m x 1 m test units and shovel tests.
