Ancestral Puebloan (Culture Keyword)
5,676-5,700 (7,426 Records)
Poised between the Sonoran Desert and Colorado Plateau, Perry Mesa and Black Mesa constitute a rugged landform split by the Agua Fria River of central Arizona. This landscape was largely unoccupied prior to the late thirteenth century but witnessed a steady and rapid stream of immigrants beginning around A.D. 1250-1275. Today, the region is enjoying newfound archaeological attention, much of which is focused on why immigrants chose this place as a destination and how they survived after...
The Mead to Phoenix 500kV Transmission Line Project: An Archaeological Survey of Expanded Right-of-Way for Cable Pulling at Ten Point-of-Turn Towers (1995)
SWCA, Inc., Environmental Consultants (SWCA), conducted a comprehensive Class III archaeological survey of expanded right-of-way at ten point-of-turn towers as part of ongoing cultural resources compliance for the Mead to Phoenix 500kV Transmission line project. These activities constituted only one phase of cultural resource compliance for this project undertaken by SWCA for Salt River Project (SRP). Other phases relevant to this project include relocation and re-evaluation (Anduze and Sorrel...

Field schools conducted from 1990-2004 resulted in two publications.
A Model for Transferring Legacy Datasets to Living Documents: A Case Study Using A GIS Geodatabase for Archiving (2012)
Archaeology is faced with the inherent problem of managing legacy datasets. Often these datasets are in a state of disrepair, thus rendering them almost useless and difficult to properly archive or to integrate into the current archaeological dialogue. Unfortunately, this is a common issue and there is not much literature on the subject. To address this dilemma, an examination of the condition of the paper documents of a legacy dataset is needed. In this research, I will review the preservation...

Multidisciplinary Research at the La Botica Site, Conejos County, Colorado (2022)
The La Botica site (5CN1061), located in Conejos County’s spectacular La Jara Canyon, is a large and complex archaeological site that preserves a remarkable record of American Indian lifeways spanning at least 7,500 years. The site is also an important locality for the San Luis Valley’s Hispano residents, who gathered medicinal plants there in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The demonstrated time depth of the site’s occupation, combined with its unique and culturally significant...

National Register of Historic Places Eligibility Testing of LA 48098, LA 69739, LA 88116, and LA 134236 Kirtland Air Force Base, Bernalillo County New Mexico (2004)
In the period between January and June of 2004, engineering-environmental Management, Inc., (e2M) conducted a cultural resources update and testing project of four sites at Kirtland Air Force Base to determine their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The results of the testing and evaluation for sites LA 48098, LA 69739, LA 88116, and LA 134236 are documented in this report. Each of the sites had been previously recorded, but further testing was recommended in order...

New Methods for Understanding the Southwest Archaic: A Density Dependent Approach to Prehistoric Behavior (1980)
The nature of the Southwestern Archaic record, reflecting several thousand years of occupation by small mobile foraging groups, provides a crucial methodological and a conceptual dilemma for archaeologists working in the area. At the heart of this dilemma is the relationship between this kind of archaeological record and the concept of the archaeological site, which is central to contemporary thinking. As broadly defined, an archaeological site may be "any place of any size where there are found...
Niche Construction and Common Pool Resource Management in Marginal Environments: A Diachronic Approach (WGF - Dissertation Fieldwork Grant) (2018)
This resource is an application for the Dissertation Fieldwork Grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation. Anthropologists have long been concerned with the immense variety of collective institutions developed by small-scale societies to foster solidarity, inculcate values, and manage resources. Long-term studies tracking the development and maintenance of such institutions would greatly benefit a range of social science disciplines, but are unfortunately rare. To this end, the proposed project...
Non-flaked Lithic Tools: Temporal-Spatial Dataset (1985)
The Reductive Technologies Group (RTG) was responsible for supporting the broad research goals of the DAP through the implementation of mid-level research design governing the collection and analysis of data from “artifacts which were manufactured by reductive, or subtractive techniques” (Phagan 1986a:79). The RTG was headed by Roger A. Moore between 1978 and 1979 and by Carl J. Phagan from 1979 to 1985, with the assistance of T. Homer Hruby between 1980 and 1984; supporting work was provided by...

Notes on Excavations in the Aztec Ruin (1928)
This report by Earl H. Morris summarizes his observations and interpretations of excavated rooms at Aztec West Ruin between 1916 and 1922. To quote Morris' introduction to the monograph "In compiling these notes, it was the desire of the writer to set down each and every condition observed that might aid in explaining the building of the pueblo, the cycle of its inhabitation, and the agencies of its destruction, and make possible the reconstruction of at least the cultural history of those who...
