The Mr. Peat Pit site consists of widespread peat and localized tufa in the latest Pleistocene paleovalley on piedmont east of Rio Grande in south central Colorado. A sample of black-mat type peat and a sample of the overlying spring-mound tufa from the pit initially were floated to recover organic fragments suitable for radiocarbon analysis. Nine samples from features at Sites 5HF1079, 5HF1082 , 5HF1096 , and 5HF1109 in south-central Colorado were floated to recover charred macrofloral remains. These sites represent late Archaic through late Prehistoric occupations, with radiocarbon dates ranging from 2060 ± 70 BP to 520 ± 60 BP. Macrofloral analysis is used to provide information concerning plant resources utilized at these sites.
