Fill from a hearth with fire-cracked rock at site 48AB1878 in southeast Wyoming was floated to recover charred macrofloral remains. This site is a multicomponent site with chipped stone tools and debitage, fire-cracked rock scatters, and diagnostic artifacts from the Middle and Late Archaic periods as well as the Late Prehistoric period (Adams 2009). Macrobotanicals, usually in the form of identifiable charcoal, have formed the basis of our archaeological evidence of what was cooked in earth ovens, and microbotanicals such as phytoliths, pollen, and starch grains are expanding that knowledge.
