Initial Experimental Analysis of Soft Hammer Techniques in the Maya Lowlands (2018)
Lowland Maya lithic studies have traditionally focused on the rise of specialization at large urban centers. While many of these studies have focused on form and function of the tools produced, few focused on the technological means of tool production. Maya lithic studies have been assumed a priori to have been created using traditional means of hard-hammer and billet reduction. This paper reviews current evidence for the use of hardwoods in the production of stone tools, as well as provide an...
An Integrated Study of Late Archaic to Early Woodland Lithics and Ceramics of the Coastal Savannah River Valley (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The Late Archaic (3000-1000 BCE) to Early Woodland (1000 – 500 BCE) transition of the South Atlantic Bight is characterized by vast sociotechnical changes. Research of these periods has been dominated in recent decades by the study of large shell rings and their likely attendant ceremonial happenings, in part because coastal erosion has necessitated...
An Integrative Approach to Cave, Open-Air and Underwater Mousterian Sites of Dalmatia (Croatia) (2018)
Paleolithic sites situated in the Hrvatsko zagorje region of north-western Croatia (Krapina, Vindija) are well known because they contain important finds of fossil human remains associated with both faunal remains and lithic industry. However, in recent years, work on Mousterian sites in Dalmatia (south Croatia) has intensified. It focuses on three types of sites, (caves, open-air, and an underwater site) as well as on a systematic survey of the region. This poster briefly presents one of each...

Intensive Regionalism Amongst Hunter-Gatherer Groups in Eastern Oklahoma (2024)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2024: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 89th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Across the southeastern United States, the Woodland Period is marked as a time by processes of increased cultural distinction known as regionalism. In Eastern Oklahoma, the Fourche Maline archaeological culture (ca. 2300 – 1100 cal. BP) demonstrates a strategy of limited mobility and high intensities of regionalism prior to the Woodland Period. These...
Inter-Island Material Conveyance and Exchange on California’s Channel Islands (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Complex Fisher-Hunter-Gatherers of North America" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Most discussions of exchange relating to California’s eight Channel Islands have been framed in terms of island-mainland interactions, of which the Chumash people of the four northern islands have been the primary focus. Less consideration has been given to the Tongva of the four southern islands as well as inter-island and intra-island...
Interdisciplinary Studies at Delta River Overlook Site, a Late Pleistocene to Late Holocene Multicomponent Site in Central Alaska (2018)
Recent large-scale excavations at Delta River Overlook in the middle Tanana River basin yielded 12 components dating from the onset of the Younger Dryas (~12,860 cal BP) to the later Holocene (2300 cal yr BP). Well preserved faunal assemblages, including bison, are present in multiple components, with economic transitions evident at ~6000 cal yr BP. Several features and activity areas were analyzed, including ochre-rich processing areas. Over 20,000 lithic items have been analyzed, primarily...

Interpreting Coefficients of Variation in Archaeological Assessments of Cultural Transmission (2023)
This is an abstract from the "Old Technology, New Methodology" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. To test hypothesized effects of cultural transmission on material cultural evolution, archaeologists primarily use the coefficient of variation (CV). Interpretation of archaeological CVs is necessarily comparative, and foundational papers have assessed variation across broad geographic regions, and relative to either theoretically-derived threshold CVs or...
Interpreting Resharpening Patterns of Paleoindian and Early Archaic Projectile Points from the Carolina Piedmont (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Resharpening occurs throughout the use-life of a tool and may indicate the intention to rejuvenate the blade edge or the reconfiguration of a tool for a new function. Analysis of this aspect of projectile point maintenance can reflect variation in resource use strategies amongst the users of these tools. This study concerns the differences in resharpening...

Continuing excavations at the McDonald Creek site, located in the Tanana Flats south of the city of Fairbanks, have yielded a significant assemblage of stone artifacts. Most of these come from a late Pleistocene cultural layer dating to about 13,900 calendar years ago, but...
