National Register Supplemental Archaeological Investigations of Seven Archaeological Sites, Fort Lee (FL1998.001)

Additional archaeological investigations were conducted on seven archaeological sites identified and recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places by MAAR Associates, Inc. Based on the additional investigations conducted by Gray & Pape, Inc., the following archaeological sites are recommended as not meeting the criteria of eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places: 44PG179, a multicomponent site, and 44PG278, a 1917 surface trash dump. However, because site 44PG278 contains artifacts that date to 1917, Gray & Pape recommends that personnel of U.S. military museums (e.g., the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps Museum) be notified of the presence of the site so artifacts can be obtained from the deposits for educational or curatorial reasons.
Archaeological sites recommended for nomination for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places include: 44PG169, a Woodland period prehistoric occupation; 44PG176, an eighteenth to century domestic historic site; 44PG182, a Woodland period prehistoric occupation; 44PG183, a seventeenth to eighteenth century domestic historic site; and 44PG260, an eighteenth to nineteenth century domestic historic site.
Management recommendations for the sites nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places include: the establishment of permanent boundary markers for each of these archaeological sites; the avoidance any military or construction activities within 10 meters of the site's boundaries as established by this study; and the inclusion of the site locations and boundaries in the base Geographic Information System to facilitate resource protection and management. Any future undertaking, as defined by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and in 36 CFR 800, should avoid these sites unless the Section 106 process is followed to completion.
