Additional Cultural Resource Investigations, Proposed Explosive Ordnance Disposal Range, Fort A. P. Hill (AP2012.001)

Part of: Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia

The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, has completed additional cultural resource investigations at nine archaeological sites identified during a recent cultural resource survey of a proposed Explosive Ordnance Disposal Range at Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The EOD Range has been proposed as a result of Base Realignment and Closure activities at Fort Lee, Virginia. During previous cultural resource investigations, conducted at the proposed EOD Range by Versar, Inc., 16 archaeological sites were identified. The current investigations included additional archaeological survey at nine of the previously identified sites (44CE0503, 44CE0506, 44CE0509, 44CE0511, 44CE0512, 44CE0513, 44CE0514, 44CE0515, and 44CE0517) and a review of structures previously identified at three of these sites (44CE0513, 44CE0515, and 44CE0517). The results of the additional investigations are presented here in the format of an addendum report. A description of the proposed undertaking, background historical research, and the results of the initial survey can be found in the Phase I survey report by Versar, Inc., entitled Archaeological Assessment of 1,033 Acres and Phase I

Archaeological Survey of 27 Acres (High Sensitivity) in the EOD Range, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia (Knepper et al. 2007).

The objective of the archaeological survey was to evaluate the potential eligibility of archaeological sites 44CE0503, 44CE0506, 44CE0509, 44CE0511, 44CE0512, 44CE0513, 44CE0514, 44CE0515, and 44CE0517 for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The archaeological survey included pedestrian surface survey and the excavation of shovel tests. As all nine of the archaeological sites represent mid-to-late twentieth-century military activities, none of these sites are recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
