Archaeological Monitoring and Sampling, Interim Removal Action, Five Underground Storage Sites - OU7 Bellows Air Force Station, Waimanalo, Ko`olaupoko District, O`ahu, Hawai`i (final)

Summary

At the request of Earth Tech, Inc., International Archaeological Research Institute, Inc. (IARII) has conducted archaeological monitoring for underground storage tank (UST) removals and site investigations at Bellows Air Force Station (BAFS), O'ahu. Remediation work was performed by OHM Remediation Services Corporation and occurred at five Remediation Areas. Archaeological monitoring and sampling procedures were guided by an Archaeological Monitoring Plan (AMP) (Dye 1999), which was reviewed and approved by the State Historic Preservation Division.

In this report, the 'undertaking' refers to the remedial actions of OHM Remediation Services Corporation. The 'project' refers to the archaeological monitoring and sampling actions performed by IARII in response to the 'undertaking.'

The project is carried out under the authority of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. As outlined in the AMP, components of the undertaking are located within and near the boundaries of archaeological resources listed as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The undertaking locations are also in or near areas designated as archaeologically sensitive and within which subsurface cultural deposits are likely to occur. The nature of the potential resources is discussed fully in the AMP (Dye 1999:7-13).
