POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FOR SITE LA 457, NEW MEXICO
Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Jaime Dexter; R.A. Varney
Year: 2006
Summary
Pollen and phytolith samples were examined from site LA 457, a multi-component
Jornada Mogollon village site with occupations ranging from the Late Archaic through the El
Paso phase. The samples were collected during the replacement of a waterline from the La
Luz Filtration Plant to the Green Reservoir in southern New Mexico because a 752 meter
segment of the pipeline passed through portions of the site. Samples examined represent two
pit house floors, fill from a probable Archaic hearth, and fill from a dump/midden. Pollen and
phytolith analyses were conducted to identify if past vegetation provide any information
concerning economic activity associated with the features represented.
