CHARCOAL AND BOTANIC IDENTIFICATION AND AMS RADIOCARBON DATING OF SAMPLES FROM THE CHICOPEE BROOK WETLAND 2 SITE (19-HD-337), HAMPDEN COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS

Author(s): Peter Kováčik

Summary

The Chicopee Brook Wetland 2 Site (19-HD-337) lies about 200 m west of Chicopee Brook in the town of Monson, south-central Massachusetts. Various artifacts including chipping debris, bifaces, projectile points, one scraper and one utilized flake were recovered at this campsite. Two Neville projectile points indicate a Middle Archaic Period (ca. 8000–5000 BP) occupation (Heather Olson, personal communication October 9, 2014). Three charcoal samples from three different features were submitted for identification to select the most suitable charred material for AMS radiocarbon age determination. Radiocarbon dates will provide additional and more precise temporal information on site occupation than do the projectile points alone.
