Cultural Resource Management Survey, 1980 Highway Program, PIN 6750.07 and PIN 6006.08, Chemung County

Editor(s): Nina Versaggi

Year: 1980

Summary

The Cultural Resources Survey for PINs 6750.07 and 6006.08 began in September, 1978 and concluded in June, 1980. The first segment involved a partial Paragraph 3 investigation along the alternates in the two PINs. A partial report was filed with the New York State Museum dated January, 1979 which detailed the work completed and reasons for stopping work. The Public Archaeology Facility did not receive authorization in the spring of 1979 to finish work before the crops were planted. By fall of 1979, authorization was granted and the second segment of our work started. This involved the completion of Paragraph 3 reconnaissance in PIN 6750.07. Frozen ground and the beginning of hunting season did not allow completion of Paragraph 3 work in PIN 6006.08. A progress report dated December, 1979 was filed with the New York State Museum detailing work completed and outlining the remaining work in the two PINs. As soon as ground conditions permitted (late April) work resumed in both PINs. This involved completion of Paragraph 3 in PIN 6006.08 and Paragraph 4 investigations in PINs 6750.07 and 6006.08. This report presents the results of this third and last segment of the project and outlines our recommendations concerning significant cultural resources in the Eimira—Lowman—Wellsburg area.
