Salt River Project, Coronado Generating Station Project, State and Private Lands, Apache and Navajo Counties, Arizona: Final Report for Phase I and II: Archaeological and Ethnohistorical Research

Author(s): David N. Siegel; James E. Bradford

Year: 1974

Summary

Between January 27 and February 15, and February 25 to May 6, 1974, the Museum of Northern Arizona acted as a consultant to Wirth Associates to study a series of alternate transmission line corridors to connect proposed Salt River Project coal-fired power plants at either the Snowflake or St. Johns localities to three substations in the Phoenix area. Then from April 11 to May 3, 1974, the Museum was contracted by Bechtel Power Corporation to complete Phase I survey investigations of the proposed plant site-wellfield areas under consideration for development for the Salt River Project 1978 Power Plant Study. The Phase I study was undertaken to provide the Salt River Project with pertinent information to aid in the selection of plant site and wellfield locations. During the period of July 29 through August 16, 1974, the Museum conducted Phase II investigations for the revised and finalized Arizona Station wellfields at both the proposed Snowflake and St. Johns plant sites. Between September 16 and 19, Phase II investigations were undertaken at the St. Johns plant site and along the main access road leading from Highway 666 east to the plant site. The primary objective of the Phase II studies was to acquire a thorough knowledge, through intensive field survey, of the archaeological resource base contained within the designated plant site-wellfield areas, to furnish the Salt River Project with this information, and to provide recommendations on mitigation programs which are designed to lessen any adverse impacts upon this archaeological resource base caused by activities connected with the Arizona Station plant site project. The Phase II information on the plant site-wellfields is, at this stage, being studied for preparation of Phase III investigations. Meanwhile, the results of the transmission line system study await further notification from the Salt River Project with regard to the finalization of route selection.
