The Tucson Aqueduct and Archaeology: The Central Arizona Project and Hohokam Prehistory

Author(s): Arizona State Museum, Tuscon, AZ

Year: 1986

Summary

The Tucson Aqueduct is the final segment of the Bureau of Reclamation’s Central Arizona Project (CAP). This 330-mile-long aqueduct system will deliver water from the Colorado River to central and southern Arizona to alleviate a continuing ground-water overdraft crisis and to provide water for municipal, industrial, and agricultural use. Phase B is the second and last leg of the Tucson Aqueduct. It begins just north of Tucson near Marana and winds its way south through the Avra Valley to the San Xavier Indian Reservation. Before aqueduct construction can begin, the Cultural Resource Management Division of the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, undercontract to the Bureau of Reclamation, will excavate eleven prehistoric Hohokam Indian sites located alongthe Phase B corridor. These sites are threatened by aqueduct construction and are considered important because of the new information they will provide about Tucson Basin Hohokam archaeology
