Archeological Inventory and Assessment at Five Lakes in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio Forest and Westmoreland Counties, Pennsylvania Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull Counties, Ohio.
JMA conducted Phase I surveys at selected study areas at three lakes, Loyalhanna, Conemaugh, and Tionesta in Pennsylvania, and two Berlin and Mosquito in Ohio. A Phase II evaluation was conducted at site 36FO119 at Tionesta. A total of 415.8 acres were tested in the Phase I survey of the five lakes resulting in the discovery, or relocation, of 33 sites and 8 isolated finds: three sites 36WM971-3,two isolated finds 36WM/40-41 at Loyalhanna; two sites 36WM790 & 792, one isolated find 36WM/42 at Conemaugh; eight sites 36FO137-144 at Tionesta; sixteen sites 33MH61-64, 70, 183-189 & 195, 33PO6, 576 & 601,four isolated finds 33MH191-194 at Berlin; and four sites 33TR236-239,one isolated find 33TR240 at Mosquito.Additional Phase II investigations are recommended at two historic sites (36WM971 & 973) at Loyalhanna,one historic site (36WM792) at Conemaugh, three prehistoric (36FO142-144) and one historic (36FO141) site at Tionesta, three prehistoric (33MH61, 63 & 183) and three historic (33MH187-188 & 189) sites at Berlin, and two historic sites (33TR237-238) at Mosquito; and a Phase III at site 33PO6 at Berlin where the shoreline is actively eroding.
