Summary
In 1969 the Salt River Project contracted the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) to excavate the prehistoric and ethnohistoric remains in the vicinity of the Navajo Generating Station (Page, Arizona), along the Black Mesa-Lake Powell railroad corridor, and in the immediate vicinity of the coal loading facility at the east end of the rail line south of Navajo National Monument. One hundred and twenty-three sites were identified, with 51 of those prehistoric sites excavated or tested. (The ethnohistoric investigations of 48 sites are presented in MNA Research Paper 25, The Archaeology of Navajo Sites West of Black Mesa, Arizona.) Two publications deal with the prehistoric sites associated with this project. This report, MNA Research Paper 30, Volume 1, The Kayenta Anasazi, Specialists' Reports, presents the special analyses conducted at selected prehistoric sites. MNA Research Paper 30, Volume II, The Kayenta Anasazi, Site Descriptions, presents standard, detailed descriptions of all prehistoric sites. Together, Volumes I and II discuss several aspects (subsistence, ceramics, human osteology, architecture, technology) of Kayenta Anasazi prehistory.
