Archaeological Investigations, Salt River Project, Coronado Generating Station Coal Haul Railroad, State and Private Land, Apache County, Arizona: Final Report for Intensive Survey of 21 Dike and Ditch Emplacements, Coronado Generating Station Coal Haul Railroad, A-77-30
Author(s): A. Stanley Granger
Year: 1977
Summary
A total of 21 proposed dike and ditch emplacements were surveyed along the Coronado Generating Station Coal Haul Railroad by the Museum of Northern Arizona between March 15 and July 26, 1977. The survey was performed at the request of Salt River Project. Although most of the emplacements were staked, a few were not. These required survey of a broad area of land around the supposed location of the emplacement to insure adequate coverage.
One site, NA15,228, was recorded by the survey in Feature 10. The site is a small sherd and lithic scatter of the Cibola Anasazi culture and may date from the Pueblo III period. It is located on the side of a small knoll on the north side of a broad shallow valley. It is recommended that the site be carefully surface mapped and collected and sample excavated by machine in accordance with the revised mitigation strategy (Marmaduke 1977:14). The remainder of the emplacements where no sites were noted are recommended for clearance.
