Summary

Phase II archaeological excavations were undertaken at 18M0396, a previously identified prehistoric site within Locus I, Area 400 of the Army Research Laboratory Adelphi Laboratory Center in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties, Maryland. The site lies in Maryland Study Unit 12 (Piedmont - Potomac drainage).

The excavations were undertaken between September 26 and October 14, 1994, and consisted of 20 excavation units oriented along four transects; two additional excavation units were also excavated.

These investigations indicated that a relatively consistent soil stratigraphy was present throughout Transects 1-3 in the northern portion of the site: surface humus, silty loam plow zone, and silty clay or compact silt subsoil. Soils along Transect 4 were silt and sand deposits mixed with gravels and cobbles, reflecting Cretaceous alluvial deposits.

Most of the artifacts were recovered from the silty loam plow zone level. Two temporally distinct horizontal concentrations were identified: a horizontal spread of lithic artifacts and fire-cracked rock associated with an Archaic Brewerton side-notched point, and a deeplystratified deposit which yielded an Transitional Archaic-Woodland Orient Fishtail point base. A particularly interesting discovery was the base from a probable Late Paleoindian or Early Archaic point, which was recovered within the area of the Archaic artifact spread. The presence of this point fragment and the temporally-distinct horizontal concentrations formed the basis for arguing that 18M0396 was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The Maryland Historic Trust did not agree with this evaluation.

This report has been prepared in accordance with the Maryland Historic Trust Guidelines for archaeological investigations in Maryland. It is prepared to a format developed by Kise, Franks and Straw for cultural resource management reports submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District.
