Summary

A Phase I archaeological investigation was conducted by Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. for Ogden Environmental and Energy Services Co., Inc. on behalf of the Historic Preservation Office, Environmental Division, Directorate of Public Works, U.S. Army, Fort Dix, New Jersey at the site of a proposed leach field and septic tank for the proposed Ammunition Storage Point (ASP) in Tactical Training Area 5D, Fort Dix Military Installation, New Hanover Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. Testing occurred in the Area of Potential Effect (APE) for the preferred and alternative locations o f the leach field and septic tank (approximately 1.7 acres). The UTM coordinates for the center of the APE are Zone 18, North 4428660, East 536150.

Background research indicated a moderate probability of locating significant prehistoric remains within the APE and revealed that no historic structures were located in the APE.

In the northern section of the APE, a 100 foot by 150 foot block (0.3 acres) was tested at the preferred location of the leach field and septic tank. In the southern section of the APE, a 300 foot by 200 foot block (1.4 acres) was tested at the alternative location for the leach field and septic tank. A total of 50 shovel test pits were excavated, from which no cultural material was recovered. No potentially significant resources were identified and no further investigation is recommended.
