Roadmap Village (LA 45157) - Unit 3 Summary
Part of the Mogollon Prehistoric Landscapes Project (MPLP) project
Author(s): Matthew Peeples
Year: 2007
Summary
Unit 3 is located in the southern portion of the Roadmap site near the highest point on the rubble mound. Unit 3, along with other adjacent rooms, was selected for excavation for a number of key features. Firstly, unit 3 was located on the highest point on the rubble mound and would thus be the most likely two story section. Secondly, unit 3 was chosen for excavation because the west, south, and east walls were relatively well defined rock alignments on the surface. Two nearby rooms (unit 1 to the east and unit 2 to the south) were heavily looted which revealed the outside faces of the southern and eastern wall of unit 3. Walls were cleared in these looted rooms which helped to define the boundaries of unit 3. Though there was some indication of looting on the surface of unit 3, it appeared to be substantially less severe than the adjacent rooms. Beyond this, these units were placed near the central portion of the site in order to improve our chances of obtaining artifact and construction data from a room used relatively early in the site’s history rather than a late addition. Excavating these adjacent rooms also helps us to understand how the site grew over time because it allows us to follow wall alignments and examine bonding and abutting relationships among several rooms.
