Roadmap Village (LA 45157) - Unit 9 Summary

Author(s): Andrea Torvinen

Year: 2012

Summary

Unit 9 is a two-story pueblo room located near the center of Roadmap Village and the presence of a well-preserved hearth in this room suggests it served a residential function. Unit 9 shares a wall with Unit 8, which is located directly south of it, and the northeast corner of Unit 9 is adjacent to the southwest corner of Unit 10. Similar to the other units excavated at Roadmap Village, Unit 9 was oriented slightly west of true north and the dimensions were 3.78m (N) by 3.83m (E) by 3.55m (S) by 3.76m (W). The presence of Unit 9 was inferred, prior to excavation, by the presence of stone alignments on the ground surface, believed to have been the upper-most courses of the west, north and south walls of the room. The walls were constructed of cobble masonry, clay mortar, chinking material and clay plaster. Two distinct deposits of roofing material (burnt wooden beams and adobe) were identified during excavation, thus, supporting the conclusion that this room was two stories tall.
