Final Report on Arizona - and National Register of Historic Places - Eligibility Testing Within Portions of Site AZ P:2:8 (GP), and Monitoring for a Prehistoric Canal Alignment, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): J. Scott Courtright

Year: 2002

Summary

Logan Simpson Design Inc. (LSD) has completed Arizona- and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)-eligibility testing within portions of AZ P:2:8 (GP). Monitoring to identify a prehistoric canal was also undertaken. Greeley and Hansen Engineers (Greeley and Hansen), on behalf of the City of Phoenix Water Services Department, retained LSD to conduct archaeological testing to determine whether remains were present that could contribute scientifically important information on the prehistoric Hohokam, thus qualifying the site for Arizona- and NRHP eligibility under Criterion D (information potential).

The project area crosses the south end of site AZ P:2:8 (GP), a prehistoric artifact scatter recorded in 1928 by Gila Pueblo. The site was described as a sherd scatter within a cultivated field. In addition to the site, a prehistoric canal was projected as crossing the sewer line. An archaeological survey of the APE for this project did not identify any surface prehistoric remains in the project area (Webb 2000). An archaeological testing program was initiated to determine if the proposed project would impact NRHP significant cultural resources that could be preserved beneath modern development within the boundaries of AZ P:2:8 (GP). The following sections describe the methods and results of eligibility testing within this portion of the site.
