Summary

The City of Tucson had proposed to construct a water recharge basin on the east side of the Santa Cruz River between Sweetwater Road and Camino del Cerro. Phase 1 archaeological data recovery was conducted at the City's request because the project area lies within the boundaries of AZ A A:12:91 (ASM), also known as the Los Pozos site. Previous archaeological work has established the significance of the Los Pozos site, which has been determined to be eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D (Gregory 1995). Archaeological data recovery was recommended should the City build within the project area (Stevens 1999b). In accordance with the plan for phased data recovery (Stevens 1999b), the primary objectives of the Phase 1 data recovery program were: 1) to determine if intact archaeological remains were present; 2) to provide sufficient data on which to base an assessment of the significance of cultural resources present within the project area; and 3) to develop a plan for the appropriate treatment of any significant resources found. This report includes a summary of the methods and results of recent Phase 1 archaeological data recovery in the project area and an assessment of the significance of features found in this portion of the Los Pozos site in relation to the research themes outlined in the data recovery plan (Stevens 1999b). After completion of this first phase of data recovery, the City of Tucson has decided not to proceed with the proposed construction activities.
