Summary

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has proposed construction work along the eastern frontage road of Interstate 19 (I-19), north of Nogales, Arizona. Previous investigations identified two archaeological sites within the scope of this project: AZ EE:9:43 (ASM) and AZ EE:9:174 (ASM). When they were initially recorded, data were insufficient for a determination of eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). Therefore, archaeological testing was recommended at the two sites to assess their significance. On call environmental consultants to ADOT, Eco Plan Associates, Inc., contracted Desert Archaeology, Inc., to complete a testing program at both locales.

Fieldwork for this project was completed in September 2001. Investigations at EE:9:174 consisted of controlled surface collection, backhoe trenching, and limited hand-excavation. A possible pithouse, a small roasting pit, and midden deposits were identified and recorded. Mitigation measures proposed for EE:9:174 are addressed in an attached data recovery plan. Recommended archaeological work includes additional trenching, backhoe stripping, and hand-excavation of identified features.
