Summary

This report presents the results of Phase 1 data recovery of nine archaeological sites along the proposed right-of-way for the Slate Creek Section of State Route 188. The Slate Creek Section is one part of a multiyear Arizona Department of Transportation project to realign and improve a 29-km long portion of SR 188, the principal road passing through the Tonto Basin, Gila County, Arizona. The entire project corridor extends north from Sycamore Creek to the junction of SR 188 with SR 87. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and occurs on Arizona Department of Transportation right-of-way across Tonto National Forest and private land.

The nine investigated sites include an Archaic site (AZ U:3:286 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1352); an early Preclassic site (AZ U:3:224 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-2064); five Classic period sites (AZ U:3:222 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1347; AZ U:3:284 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1348; AZ U:3:285 [ASM]/AR- 03-12-06-1350; AZ U:3:287 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1353; and AZ U:3:288 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1354); and an historic irrigation canal (AZ U:3:223 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-2062). The ninth site, AZ U:3:31 (ARS)/AR-03-12-06-1357, was described as a lithic artifact scatter but was found to be a nonsite artifact scatter.

The report presents the general environmental setting of the project area, and briefly describes the history of archaeological research in the vicinity of the Slate Creek Section. The individual sites are considered separately; the field methods employed at each particular site are presented, the features and deposits discovered are considered, and the artifact assemblage is described. These initial results are evaluated, and recommendations for further work are presented for six sites: AZ U:3:286 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1352; AZ U:3:224 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-2064; AZ U:3:285 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1350; AZ U:3:223 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-2062; AZ U:3:287 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06- 1353, and AZ U:3:288 [ASM]/AR-03-12-06-1354. A research design is presented to guide the Phase 2 data recovery investigations at these sites, along with a plan of work.
