Douglas Shaver, MS, RPA (Burns & McDonnell) CRM and the Significance of Identifying and Mapping Historic Extant Trail Remnants: A Study in Mapping the Santa Fe Trail through the State of Kansas Utilizing Available LiDAR Data and GIS Mapping. A key early role in any CRM project is the identification of historic properties, archaeological sites, and cultural resources that may potentially be directly or indirectly impacted by a project undertaking. Beyond the identification of previously identified archaeological and historic architectural sites, within a project study area prior to the initiation of fieldwork, this paper stresses the importance of reviewing known historic trail data and ways to incorporate, analyze, and digitize the data in GIS utilizing historic-era maps, regional resources including historical or trail related organizations, and available LiDAR data in concert, to create a comprehensive dataset that can be utilized for project avoidance.
