Yucca Braids, Accession AZRU-00008, Catalog #2815. Morris FS 5294. Analyzed by Laurie Webster, 2006. Bundle of thick 3-strand braids bound together with 2S-Z yucca cordage tied in a square knot. Includes a long coiled strand of braided yucca leaves and two short pieces of braided yucca fiber. Measurements: L 2.5 M, D 1.5 CM (leaf braid), L 40+, D 1.0 CM (fiber braid), L 27.0, W 26.0 (coiled bundle). Images: AZRU8-2815 A: bundle of 3-strand braids worked in yucca leaf and yucca fiber. AZRU8-2815 B: detail of yucca 2s-Z binding cord. AZRU8-2815 C: other face. Recovered from Earl Morris' excavation of Room 189, Lower Level, Aztec West Ruin. Morris noted that Room 189 “contained the largest quantity of perishable objects from the Chaco period that have to date been taken from any chamber in the western half of the pueblo. [Later occupants] laid down a 1 to 3 inch floor of adobe upon the earlier refuse and a bin was built up in the northwest corner” (Morris1928:371).
