Second Woods
Summary
The Second Woods site was excavated as part of the Mohawk Valley Project. The site is located in the town of Minden, New York, and lies on a long ridge that runs westward from the village of Fort Plain. Second Woods is one of several sites clustered in the town of Minden, on the south side of the Mohawk River. It may have been one of the communities that came together later at Otstungo. Second Woods is one of the few excavated examples of small villages that preceded the nucleation and movements to defensive locations that occurred late in the fifteenth century. The Second Woods site was first discovered in 1921 by Douglas Ayers while he was still in high school. He dug on the site in the summers of 1922 and 1923. The University at Albany surveyed the area in 1982, but were not sure where Ayers had previously dug. The University at Albany excavated the site in 1990 and 1991 under the direction of Susan Bamann.
