Aurora Site
Summary
The Aurora site was previously named the Harris site after the family name of the landowner. Shovel testing was carried out at this site from July 25, 1978 to Aug. 3, 1978. Crews returned and continued shovel testing the following summer from July 25, 1979 to July 30, 1979. Shovel test pits were excavated throughout the test area which encompasses the two separate swampy areas on the Harris farm.
A single artifact was uncovered by the SUNY at Albany 1978 summer investigation. This bovid tibia, either bison or modern bos. It was partially fossilized with evidence of butchering in cuts scarring the surface. No additional items were found in the course of additional test pits or excavations.
The site map not drawn to scale is included within the documents of the catalog. No reliable map documentation exists for this specific site. However, there are three sketch maps and these can be matched to satellite imagery. Housing developments are now encroaching on the site, but no construction has taken place on the site because of its swampy soil.
