Pueblo Grande (AZ U:9:1(ASM)): Units 08 and 09, Pueblo Grande Cultural Park and Washington St: Soil Systems, Inc. Pueblo Grande Museum Expansion Monitoring and Testing Project
Summary
In 1990, Soil System's archaeologists completed a testing project (SSI Project No. 90-08) within the Pueblo Grande Cultural Park to help prepare development plans for a museum expansion. The project was conducted for the City of Phoenix Parks, Recreation, and Library Department. SSI tested an area west of the original museum building and public parking lot (in Units 08 and 09 of Pueblo Grande). The testing project included both backhoe trenching and stripping. Eight backhoe trenches 182 m in length were excavated to an average depth of 1.8 m. Nearly 2000 square meters were mechanically stripped. A total of 128 archaeological features was recorded. The features included 22 possible pithouses, 16 floor or wall fragments, 48 pits of various types, 9 isolated hearths, 5 trash areas, 11 possible burials (7 cremations and 4 possible inhumations), 15 artifact concentrations, and 2 historic features. None of the human burials that were encountered were excavated, and all were reburied where found. Most of the features excavated dated to the Colonial or Sedentary period. Some Classic period material was present, but most of the Classic period occupation in the project area appeared to have been destroyed by historic or modern activities, such as farming and construction. The data derived from this testing project were used to plan the placement of three new buildings in areas that would have the least impact to buried archaeological remains. Soil Systems archaeologists later conducted a data recovery project (SSI Project No. 94-11) in the footprints of the proposed buildings (see http://core.tdar.org/project/372318).
