Weber I Site, MI (20SA581) Project

Summary

The Weber I site is a stratified Archaic period site located on the Cass River where it flows through the outskirts of Frankenmuth, Michigan in the Saginaw Valley region. The lower strata (Occupation Zone II) is the only sealed cultural occupation dated to the Middle Archaic period in the Upper Great Lakes in which organic remains are preserved. Seven features, lithic artifacts, and both faunal and floral materials indicate a late summer through fall season of multiple occupations. A total of 91 square meters were excavated. This occupation is dated to ca. 6200-4900 B.P. based on two C14 dates. A sterile alluvial deposit of approximately 0.5 meters separates the Middle Archaic zone from the Late/Terminal Archaic occupation (Occupation Zone I) which produced 28 features, lithic artifacts, and both floral and faunal materials. A total of 98 square meters were excavated, and based on three C14 dates, Occupation Zone I is dated to ca. 2900-3000 B.P. The Late Archaic occupation is considered to have been occupied in late summer through early fall. Wet screening onsite as well as flotation samples facilitated fine scale sampling of the Middle Archaic (25 10 l. samples) and Late Archaic (27 10 l. samples) from both midden control and feature contexts.
