Marquette Viaduct Replacement (20BY28/387) Project

Summary

The Marquette Viaduct Replacement Project (20BY28/387) represents a continuation of decades of archaeological work in an industrial area near downtown Bay City, MI along the west bank of the Saginaw River approximately 2 km. from the mouth of the river where it empties into Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron. Occupation of the area begins in the Late Archaic and all subsequent prehistoric cultural periods are represented as well as the historic Fletcher Site, a large 18th century Native American cemetery site. The sites lie at 182 m. ASL and detailed work by William Monaghan and William Lovis have contributed valuable geomorphological data in an effort to track the complex sequence of changing lake levels in the region. The 2000 excavations of this locality of 20BY28 and 20BY387 revealed two contiguous occupations dating to the Late Archaic and Late Woodland periods. The two cultural periods are delineated on the basis on ceramics and lithics recovered within features and the faunal analysis considers only animal bone from features recovered through ¼” mesh and 10 l. or more flotation samples. In total, Block 28 (50 m2) and Block 387 (140 m2) revealed 141 features and 3 Late Archaic period burials which have been repatriated. Fifteen features produced faunal remains dated to the Late Archaic and the occupations are dated between ca. 4200-3000 radiocarbon years BP.
