Paynetown Light Site (12MO193) 1987

Summary

The USACE, Louisville District obtained the collection through an archaeological test excavation at the Paynetown Light Site in the Monroe Reservoir located in Monroe County, Indiana. In order to evaluate the archaeological significance of the site and assess its eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, GBL performed the investigation under contract with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Reservoirs. The investigation was prompted by continuing impacts to the site in the form of severe erosion and informal recreational activities.

Fieldwork consisted of hand excavation of trenches conducted under the supervision of Patrick J. Munson (Principal Investigator) and Jeffery A. Myers. Work began on October 11, 1986 and continued intermittently until March 29, 1987. There is one accession number, 6812, associated with this investigation of Site 12MO193 (Myers and Munson 1987). The county symbol that is employed is MO, which represents Monroe County, Indiana.
