Patoka Lake Excavations (12DU7 and 12DU8) 1976

Summary

James R. Denbow’s report, entitled Archaeological Excavations in the Patoka Reservoir Dubois County, Indiana, describes the results of the archeological test excavation undertaken at two rock shelters, Kitchen Rock (12DU7) and Saltpeter Cave (12DU7), located within the boundaries of the Patoka Reservoir in eastern Dubois County, Indiana. Though both shelters were situated above the proposed high water level of the reservoir and were not directly endangered by the construction of the dam, they were within proposed recreational areas and testing was recommended after the initial archeological survey because of their archeological potential and the increased opportunity for uncontrolled digging or other forms of abuse which might result from their close proximity to the lake. Test excavations to assess the significance of the archeological deposits in these shelters began in May 1975 and were financed through the National Park Service (contract number Inter CS6000-5-0184) (Denbow 1976).
