Smith's Fork Site (23CL223) 2009-2010

Summary

The Smith’s Fork Site (23CL223) is located on Smithville Lake, which is a USACE Kansas City District subject property located in Clay County, Missouri. In 2000, the City of Smithville proposed the construction of a soccer field in the area of the site. A USACE archaeologist visited the site and recommended that further testing would need to occur to determine if building could go below a depth of eight inches. In 2007, the city renewed its interest in building at this location; so another USACE archaeologist, Tim Meade, performed shovel tests at Smith’s Fork Site. Based on the results of the shovel tests, Tim Mead contacted University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) archaeologist Dr. L. Mark Raab to facilitate further testing at Smith’s Fork Site. In 2009, Dr. Raab conducted an initial survey, which included ground penetrating radar and auger testing, and generated a map of the site (Shaver 2011:22–28).

From April to August 2010, the Smith’s Fork site was excavated by a crew from numerous institutions, including USACE, UMKC, Missouri State Historic Preservation Office, Fort Osage, Center for Archaeological Research of Missouri State University in Springfield, Johnson County Community College, Longview Community College, and the University of Kansas (Shaver 2011:29–44). Douglas Shaver of UMKC published a thesis documenting the geospatial data at the Smith’s Fork Site (November 2011). Due to the fact that UMKC is the first institution contacted by USACE, staffed each period of fieldwork, and a student from the university wrote his thesis on results from the excavation, VCP staff decided to refer to the University of Missouri Kansas City as the investigating organization. Shaver (2011:30) refers to Dr. Gina Powell as the principal investigator for the work conducted at the Smith’s Fork Site, even though she is from a different organization, Center for Archaeological Research of Missouri State University in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District Smith’s Fork Site (23CL223) 2009–2010 Curation Management Project 2 Springfield, Missouri. Because Shaver referred to Dr. Powell as the principal investigator, she was recorded this way in the artifact catalog.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, oversized materials spreadsheet, photographic materials spreadsheet, scanned asset key, and select artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the archives database, box labels, document folder listing, initial data collection, notes, oversized document label, and records removal sheet. For additional information, refer to the finding aid.
