Stockton Lake Survey and Wimmer Collection 1992-1993
Summary
Stockton Lake Survey and Wimmer Collection 1992–1993 is somewhat unique in that it includes materials that were recovered from the Stockton Lake area by an amateur archaeologist, as well as materials that were recovered as part of an official archaeological investigation in the same area. The Stockton Lake Survey and Assessment investigation was carried out in the Stockton Lake areas of Dade, Cedar, and Polk counties, Missouri, between the fall of 1992 and the spring of 1993 by Historic Preservation Associates (HPA), under the direction of Principal Investigator Timothy C. Klinger. The project involved test excavations at sites 23DA407 and 23DA408 in the Maze Creek Drainage Area, as well as pedestrian survey of 1,372.4 acres throughout eight Public Use Areas of Stockton Lake and the Maze Creek Drainage. Ninety archaeological sites were investigated and 24 isolated, prehistoric artifacts were collected during the course of the fieldwork. The project was carried out to assess the effects of power generation on resources downstream of Stockton Dam on the Sac River (Klinger et al.1993a).
As a supplement to the Stockton Lake Survey and Assessment project,HPA also analyzed artifacts that were collected in the Stockton Lake area by amateur archaeologist, Howard R. Wimmer. The timeframe for Wimmer’s collection activities in the Stockton area are not known. The artifacts were, “analyzed for use-wear and classified according to typologies commonly accepted for the Stockton area” (Klinger et al. 1993b: 6). The Wimmer collection was subsequently included with the archaeological materials from the Stockton Lake Survey and Assessment and all materials were processed together by the VCP.
The materials from the Stockton Lake Survey and Wimmer Collection 1992–1993 were collected throughout the Stockton Lake areas of Cedar, Dade, and Polk counties in Missouri. All site numbers from the collection are recorded using the official Smithsonian Institution trinomial site numbers. The county abbreviations, “CE,” “DA,” and “PO” refer to Cedar, Dade, and Polk Counties, respectively. The site numbers from each county often seem to skip around, which is likely due to the fact that the Stockton Lake Survey and Assessment was only focused on specific Public Use Areas in the Stockton area and largely included re-evaluations of previously recorded sites.
The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, original investigation report, scanned asset key, and select artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include the archives database, additional artifact photographs, box labels, correspondence, document folder listing, initial data collection, map, notes, records removal sheet, and soil sample catalog. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
