Tishomingo County Type Collection N.D.

Summary

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Mobile District archaeological collections were sent to the Veterans Curation Program’s (VCP) Augusta laboratory in April of 2014. The Augusta VCP laboratory is a USACE, St. Louis District’s Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections program, which was staffed through New South Associates, Inc., an archaeological contract firm located in Stone Mountain, Georgia between April of 2014 and April of 2015. Between April and October of 2015 the program was staffed through Cogstone-Berger JV, an archaeological contract firm located in Orange, California. Beginning in mid-October 2015, the program was staffed by ERG-NSA JV, a joint venture between Environmental Research Group (ERG) of Baltimore, Maryland, and New South Associates, Inc., headquartered in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

The procedures employed to re-house the archaeological material from the Tishomingo County Type Collection N.D. investigation are discussed below and follow those procedures utilized by the Augusta VCP laboratory. In the re-housing process of each investigative effort of the USACE, St. Mobile District collection, the same standard procedures and Mississippi State University’s (MSU) Cobb Institute of Archaeology guidelines were followed. Upon completion of the curation management project, the collection will be sent to Cobb Institute of Archaeology at MSU (Starkville, Mississippi) for permanent curation. The Tishomingo County Type Collection N.D. investigation falls under the purview of USACE, Mobile District and is curated by the Cobb Institute of Archaeology. It consists of prehistoric artifacts recovered during archaeological investigations conducted in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. This investigation was called a “type collection” because all of the artifacts, consisting of ceramic, faunal, and lithic material, are specimens that represent the range of diagnostic artifacts recovered from the investigation. For example, the ceramic artifacts are decorated and undecorated historic base, body, and rim sherds, while the lithic artifact assemblage includes anvil stones, bifaces, groundstones, and projectile points. Except for the above information that was listed on the box label and the physical box, no other information about these investigations was available.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, and select artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact photographs. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.
